Overview

The AMD TR 3990X is a desktop processor with 64 cores, released in 2020 at an MSRP of $3,990. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 3000 platform, and fits the TRX40 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 2" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 128 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 3990X has a base clock of 2.9 GHz and can boost up to 4.3 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 2" silicon on a 7nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 280W, the TR 3990X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 32MB of L2, and 256MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.
