Overview

The AMD TR 2970WX is a desktop processor with 24 cores, released in 2018 at an MSRP of $1,299. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 2000 platform, and fits the TR4 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen+" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 48 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 2970WX has a base clock of 3 GHz and can boost up to 4.2 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen+" silicon on a 12nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 250W, the TR 2970WX runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 96KB/core of L1, 12MB of L2, and 64MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

WX extreme workstation variant — 24 cores across all 4 dies (6 per die) with full 64MB L3.
