Xeon W-1290E

Intel · Xeon W · 2020 · LGA1200

Overview

The Intel Xeon W-1290E is a desktop processor with 10 cores, released in 2020 at an MSRP of $500. It is part of the Xeon W lineup, using the Xeon W platform, and fits the LGA1200 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Comet Lake" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 20 threads for improved parallelism. The Xeon W-1290E has a base clock of 3.5 GHz and can boost up to 4.8 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Comet Lake" silicon on a 14nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR4 memory. With a TDP of 95W, the Xeon W-1290E sits in a typical power envelope for a modern desktop CPU. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of no dedicated of L1, no dedicated of L2, and 20MB of L3 cache.

Comet Lake "Xeon W" — workstation-branded variant of the mainstream Comet Lake desktop platform, offering ECC support on Socket 1200.
