Overview

The AMD TR 3960X is a desktop processor with 24 cores, released in 2019 at an MSRP of $1,399. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 3000 platform, and fits the TRX40 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 2" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 48 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 3960X has a base clock of 3.8 GHz and can boost up to 4.5 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 2" silicon on a 7nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 280W, the TR 3960X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 12MB of L2, and 128MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

24-core Zen 2 Threadripper. Retains the full 128MB L3 despite fewer cores than the 3970X — 4 CCDs with some cores disabled per CCD.
