Overview

The AMD TR 3970X is a desktop processor with 32 cores, released in 2019 at an MSRP of $1,999. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 3000 platform, and fits the TRX40 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 2" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 64 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 3970X has a base clock of 3.7 GHz and can boost up to 4.5 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 2" silicon on a 7nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 280W, the TR 3970X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 16MB of L2, and 128MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

32-core Zen 2 Threadripper on the new TRX40 platform. Widely regarded as better value than the 3990X for most workloads.
