Overview

The AMD TR 7960X is a desktop processor with 24 cores, released in 2023 at an MSRP of $1,499. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 7000 platform, and fits the sTR5 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 4" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 48 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 7960X has a base clock of 4.2 GHz and can boost up to 5.3 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 4" silicon on a TSMC 5nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR5 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 350W, the TR 7960X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 24MB of L2, and 128MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

Entry into Threadripper 7000. Retains full 128MB L3 cache despite 24 cores — same 4-CCD design as 7970X with some cores disabled per CCD.
