Overview

The AMD TR 9970X is a desktop processor with 32 cores, released in 2025 at an MSRP of $2,499. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 9000 platform, and fits the sTR5 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 5" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 64 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 9970X has a base clock of 4 GHz and can boost up to 5.4 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 5" silicon on a TSMC 4nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR5 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 350W, the TR 9970X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 32MB of L2, and 128MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

Zen 5 Shimada Peak, 32-core HEDT. Higher base clock than 9980X due to more power headroom per core at the same 350W TDP. Considered the better all-round value vs the flagship for most workloads.
