AMD · Threadripper · 2017 · TR4

Overview

The AMD TR 1950X is a desktop processor with 16 cores, released in 2017 at an MSRP of $999. It is part of the Threadripper lineup, using the TR 1000 platform, and fits the TR4 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 32 threads for improved parallelism. The TR 1950X has a base clock of 3.4 GHz and can boost up to 4 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen" silicon on a 14nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 180W, the TR 1950X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 96KB/core of L1, 8MB of L2, and 32MB of L3 cache.
