Overview

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is a desktop processor with 16 cores, released in 2024 at an MSRP of $649. It is part of the Ryzen 9 lineup, using the Ryzen 9000 platform, and fits the AM5 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 5" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 32 threads for improved parallelism. The Ryzen 9 9950X has a base clock of 4.3 GHz and can boost up to 5.7 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 5" silicon on a TSMC 4nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR5 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 170W, the Ryzen 9 9950X runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. Integrated graphics are provided by the Radeon Graphics solution, so a discrete GPU is not required for display output. The cache hierarchy consists of 1MB of L1, 16MB of L2, and 64MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

The non-3D-cache flagship of the Zen 5 desktop lineup, sharing its clock profile with the cache-enhanced 9950X3D but without the stacked V-Cache that gives that chip its gaming-focused cache boost.
