Overview

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a desktop processor with 8 cores, released in 2022 at an MSRP of $449. It is part of the Ryzen 7 lineup, using the Ryzen 5000 platform, and fits the AM4 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 3" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 16 threads for improved parallelism. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a base clock of 3.4 GHz and can boost up to 4.5 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 3" silicon on a 7nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 105W, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D sits in a typical power envelope for a modern desktop CPU. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 4MB of L2, and 96MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

First AMD 3D V-Cache desktop CPU — 32MB standard L3 + 64MB stacked V-Cache = 96MB total. Widely regarded as the best gaming CPU of its generation and remains competitive years after launch.
