Xeon Platinum 8490H

Intel · Xeon Platinum · 2023 · LGA4677

Overview

The Intel Xeon Platinum 8490H is a server processor with 60 cores, released in 2023 at an MSRP of $17,000. It is part of the Xeon Platinum lineup, using the Xeon Scalable platform, and fits the LGA4677 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Sapphire Rapids" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 120 threads for improved parallelism. The Xeon Platinum 8490H has a base clock of 1.9 GHz and can boost up to 3.5 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Sapphire Rapids" silicon on a Intel 7 process node. This processor supports DDR5 memory across 8 channels, up to 4TB total, with ECC support standard for data integrity in server workloads. It supports both single-socket (1P) and dual-socket (2P) configurations, with 80 lanes of PCIe 5.0 available for storage, networking and accelerators. With a TDP of 350W, the Xeon Platinum 8490H runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. The cache hierarchy consists of no dedicated of L1, no dedicated of L2, and 112.5MB of L3 cache — a substantial cache pool well suited to memory-bound enterprise and virtualization workloads.

4th Gen Xeon Scalable 'Sapphire Rapids' — Intel's first Xeon generation with DDR5, PCIe 5.0, and on-die AMX AI acceleration.
