Xeon Platinum 8380

Intel · Xeon Platinum · 2021 · LGA4189

Overview

The Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 is a server processor with 40 cores, released in 2021 at an MSRP of $8,099. It is part of the Xeon Platinum lineup, using the Xeon Scalable platform, and fits the LGA4189 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Sunny Cove" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 80 threads for improved parallelism. The Xeon Platinum 8380 has a base clock of 2.3 GHz and can boost up to 3.4 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Sunny Cove" silicon on a Intel 10nm process node. This processor supports DDR4 memory across 8 channels, up to 6TB total, with ECC support standard for data integrity in server workloads. It supports dual-socket (2P) configurations, with 64 lanes of PCIe 4.0 available for storage, networking and accelerators. With a TDP of 270W, the Xeon Platinum 8380 runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. The cache hierarchy consists of no dedicated of L1, no dedicated of L2, and 60MB of L3 cache.

3rd Gen Xeon Scalable flagship. Ice Lake's 10nm node and Sunny Cove core architecture brought a solid IPC gain over Cascade Lake, though it entered the market as AMD's EPYC Milan was demonstrating a substantial per-core performance lead.
