Xeon Gold 6438N

Intel · Xeon Gold · 2023 · LGA4677

Overview

The Intel Xeon Gold 6438N is a server processor with 32 cores, released in 2023 at an MSRP of $3,351. It is part of the Xeon Gold lineup, using the Xeon Scalable platform, and fits the LGA4677 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Sapphire Rapids" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 64 threads for improved parallelism. The Xeon Gold 6438N has a base clock of 2 GHz and can boost up to 3.6 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Sapphire Rapids" silicon on a Intel 7 process node. This processor supports DDR5 memory across 8 channels, up to 4TB total, with ECC support standard for data integrity in server workloads. It supports both single-socket (1P) and dual-socket (2P) configurations, with 80 lanes of PCIe 5.0 available for storage, networking and accelerators. With a TDP of 205W, the Xeon Gold 6438N runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. The cache hierarchy consists of no dedicated of L1, no dedicated of L2, and 60MB of L3 cache.

A separately-numbered Sapphire Rapids part also carrying the network-optimized 'N' suffix, which happens to share clock and core specs with the 6433 pair despite the different model number.
