Xeon 6979P

Intel · Xeon 6 · 2024 · LGA7529

Overview

The Intel Xeon 6979P is a server processor with 120 cores, released in 2024 at an MSRP of $15,750. It is part of the Xeon 6 lineup, using the Xeon 6 platform, and fits the LGA7529 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Redwood Cove" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 240 threads for improved parallelism. The Xeon 6979P has a base clock of 2.1 GHz and can boost up to 3.9 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Redwood Cove" silicon on a Intel 3 process node. This processor supports DDR5 memory across 12 channels, up to 6TB total, with ECC support standard for data integrity in server workloads. It supports both single-socket (1P) and dual-socket (2P) configurations, with 96 lanes of PCIe 5.0 available for storage, networking and accelerators. With a TDP of 500W, the Xeon 6979P runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. The cache hierarchy consists of 112KB/core of L1, 2MB/core of L2, and 504MB of L3 cache — a substantial cache pool well suited to memory-bound enterprise and virtualization workloads.

Second-tier Granite Rapids-AP SKU, just below the 6980P flagship, sharing the same 504MB L3 and 500W TDP but with 8 fewer cores.
