Core i7-940

Intel · Core i7 · 2008 · LGA1366

Overview

The Intel Core i7-940 is a desktop processor with 4 cores, released in 2008 at an MSRP of $562. It is part of the Core i7 lineup, using the 1st Gen platform, and fits the LGA1366 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Nehalem" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 8 threads for improved parallelism. The Core i7-940 has a base clock of 2.93 GHz and can boost up to 3.2 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Nehalem" silicon on a 45nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR3 memory. With a TDP of 130W, the Core i7-940 sits in a typical power envelope for a modern desktop CPU. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 32KB/core of L1, 256KB/core of L2, and 8MB of L3 cache.

Launch-day Bloomfield alongside the i7-920 and i7-965 EE.
