Core i7-870

Intel · Core i7 · 2009 · LGA1156

Overview

The Intel Core i7-870 is a desktop processor with 4 cores, released in 2009 at an MSRP of $562. It is part of the Core i7 lineup, using the 1st Gen platform, and fits the LGA1156 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Nehalem" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 8 threads for improved parallelism. The Core i7-870 has a base clock of 2.93 GHz and can boost up to 3.6 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Nehalem" silicon on a 45nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR3 memory. With a TDP of 95W, the Core i7-870 sits in a typical power envelope for a modern desktop CPU. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 32KB/core of L1, 256KB/core of L2, and 8MB of L3 cache.

Lynnfield flagship on the more affordable LGA1156 platform. Had exceptional Turbo Boost headroom — base 2.93 GHz could boost to 3.6 GHz on a single core.
