Core i7-4790

Intel · Core i7 · 2014 · LGA1150

Overview

The Intel Core i7-4790 is a desktop processor with 4 cores, released in 2014 at an MSRP of $303. It is part of the Core i7 lineup, using the 4th Gen platform, and fits the LGA1150 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Haswell" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 8 threads for improved parallelism. The Core i7-4790 has a base clock of 3.6 GHz and can boost up to 4 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Haswell" silicon on a 22nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR3 memory. With a TDP of 84W, the Core i7-4790 sits in a typical power envelope for a modern desktop CPU. Integrated graphics are provided by the HD 4600 solution, so a discrete GPU is not required for display output. The cache hierarchy consists of 32KB/core of L1, 1MB of L2, and 8MB of L3 cache.

Haswell Refresh — updated stepping with slightly higher clocks than the i7-4770.
