Core i5-8400

Intel · Core i5 · 2017 · LGA1151

Overview

The Intel Core i5-8400 is a desktop processor with 6 cores, released in 2017 at an MSRP of $182. It is part of the Core i5 lineup, using the 8th Gen platform, and fits the LGA1151 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Coffee Lake" architecture. The Core i5-8400 has a base clock of 2.8 GHz and can boost up to 4 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Coffee Lake" silicon on a 14nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR4 memory. With a TDP of 65W, the Core i5-8400 is an efficient chip suitable for modest cooling solutions. Integrated graphics are provided by the UHD 630 solution, so a discrete GPU is not required for display output. The cache hierarchy consists of 32KB/core of L1, 1.5MB of L2, and 9MB of L3 cache.

Highly popular 6-core mainstream CPU. Coffee Lake's jump to 6 cores on the i5 was a major generational leap from the previous 4-core i5.
