Overview

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900 is a desktop processor with 12 cores, released in 2021 at an MSRP of $399. It is part of the Ryzen 9 lineup, using the Ryzen 5000 platform, and fits the AM4 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen 3" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 24 threads for improved parallelism. The Ryzen 9 5900 has a base clock of 3 GHz and can boost up to 5.3 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen 3" silicon on a 7nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. ECC memory is supported, provided the motherboard enables it. With a TDP of 65W, the Ryzen 9 5900 is an efficient chip suitable for modest cooling solutions. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 6MB of L2, and 64MB of L3 cache — an unusually large L3 that greatly benefits latency-sensitive workloads like gaming.

65W non-X variant of the 5900X. Same 12-core Zen 3 silicon at lower TDP.
