Core i7-6950X Extreme

Intel · Core i7 · 2016 · LGA2011-3

Overview

The Intel Core i7-6950X Extreme is a desktop processor with 10 cores, released in 2016 at an MSRP of $1,723. It is part of the Core i7 lineup, using the Broadwell-E platform, and fits the LGA2011-3 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Broadwell-E" architecture. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 20 threads for improved parallelism. The Core i7-6950X Extreme has a base clock of 3 GHz and can boost up to 3.5 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. Intel manufactures the "Broadwell-E" silicon on a 14nm process node. The multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking straightforward. This processor supports DDR4 memory. With a TDP of 140W, the Core i7-6950X Extreme sits in a typical power envelope for a modern desktop CPU. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 32KB/core of L1, 256KB/core of L2, and 25MB of L3 cache.

First 10-core consumer desktop CPU. Launched at $1,723 — the most expensive consumer Core i7 Extreme Edition. The move to LGA2011-3 and DDR4 brought it onto the same platform as the Haswell-E 5960X. Intel overclocking champion at the time.
