EPYC 7301

AMD · EPYC 7001 · 2017 · SP3

Overview

The AMD EPYC 7301 is a server processor with 16 cores, released in 2017 at an MSRP of $800. It is part of the EPYC 7001 lineup, using the EPYC 7001 platform, and fits the SP3 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Zen" architecture. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), each core can handle two instruction streams simultaneously, yielding a total of 32 threads for improved parallelism. The EPYC 7301 has a base clock of 2.2 GHz and can boost up to 2.7 GHz depending on workload and thermal headroom. AMD manufactures the "Zen" silicon on a GF 14nm process node. This processor supports DDR4 memory across 8 channels, up to 2TB total, with ECC support standard for data integrity in server workloads. It supports both single-socket (1P) and dual-socket (2P) configurations, with 128 lanes of PCIe 3.0 available for storage, networking and accelerators. With a TDP of 170W, the EPYC 7301 runs hot and requires a capable cooling setup. The cache hierarchy consists of 64KB/core of L1, 512KB/core of L2, and 64MB of L3 cache — a substantial cache pool well suited to memory-bound enterprise and virtualization workloads.

1st Gen EPYC 'Naples' — AMD's original server return, built on the original Zen architecture at 14nm.
