Intel · Core 2 Duo · 2008 · LGA775
The Intel Core 2 E8500 is a desktop processor with 2 cores, released in 2008 at an MSRP of $183. It is part of the Core 2 Duo lineup, using the Core 2 platform, and fits the LGA775 socket. Internally, it is built on the "Penryn" architecture. It operates at a fixed 3.16 GHz. Intel manufactures the "Penryn" silicon on a 45nm process node. Its multiplier is locked, so any overclocking has to come from raising the base clock rather than the multiplier. This processor supports DDR2/DDR3 memory. With a TDP of 65W, the Core 2 E8500 is an efficient chip suitable for modest cooling solutions. This processor has no integrated graphics — a discrete GPU is required. The cache hierarchy consists of 32KB/core of L1 and 6MB of L2 cache. There is no L3 cache on this processor.
Between E8400 and E8600 in the Wolfdale lineup. 6MB L2 and strong IPC made these excellent gaming CPUs for their era.
